It’s no secret that I’ve been a Morrissey fan since my awkward teenage years — a love that’s survived fashion, controversy and countless sing-alongs in the car. So when I discovered he was playing live at Toronto’s Budweiser Stage on the very evening we arrived in the city, fate had spoken. Tickets were booked long before we crossed the border, and even Deb — normally allergic to Mozzer — agreed to come along.

Arriving at the Budweiser Stage

The Budweiser Stage sits right on Toronto’s waterfront, surrounded by trees and open sky. It’s a fantastic outdoor venue — large enough to feel like an event, but intimate enough that every seat still feels close to the action. The sun was just starting to dip as we arrived, the air warm, the crowd buzzing with anticipation.

The Concert

I’m not going to waffle on about nostalgia or about the concert but needless to say Morrissey was faultless throughout. His later music hasn’t been great but does it need to be when he such an amazing setlist to fall back on? The setlist, which i’ve put at the bottom of the post was a great mix of Smiths classics and Morrissey staples with a couple of curveballs thrown in. Mozzer was on form for the entire gig with quips and asides to the eager crowd. His voice hasn’t lost a thing in the 10 years since i saw him play in Manchester over 10 years ago and he was utterly utterly charming from beginning to end.

I would be lying if i said i took it all in my stride and didn’t get emotional. I managed to hold back the blubbering as he opened the show with There is a light that never goes out but when he followed it up with Suedehead it was all too much lol.

Hit followed hit and classic followed classic and it was 90 minutes plus of awesomeness.

Live Videos

It’s only fan footage taken with an iphone so don’t expect professional unshaky video’s and I apologise in advance if you can hear my awful singing in the background but i shall watch these till the day i die – what fantastic memories to have

Final Thoughts

When the final encore ended and the lights came up, we both agreed it had been one of the most memorable evenings of the trip. We left with ears ringing, spirits high, and the city skyline glittering over the lake. Even Deb admitted, “He was great.” High praise indeed.

After the Show

We grabbed a taxi back into town, still humming the last song, and rounded off the night with margaritas, tacos, and a box of Timbits. A perfect end to a perfect gig — and a reminder that sometimes the best travel memories come with a soundtrack.
